2015 Manufacturer of the Year Horizon Motorhomes is celebrating 21 years as the RV with ‘satisfaction built-in’. The family owned and operated company was founded locally in 1995, by Clayton Kearney, his mother Shirley and late stepfather Ron Hughes.
21 years has shaped, moulded, and transformed Horizon Motorhomes from a humble, small business with big, creative ideas into what you see today – Australia’s most recognised brand for built-in recreational vehicles.
In 1995, noticing a gap in the industry, Clayton Kearney developed Horizon’s first motorhome conversions with a Mazda Bus and a Toyota Coaster that redefined what it meant to own a motorhome.
“We started fitting out some second hand buses as motorhomes, and they were selling so well that we saw the need for a brand,” Clayton said.
The first ‘branded’ Horizon Motorhome was the ‘Wattle’ and Horizon’s diverse range now consists of eight vehicles including: Melaleuca, Casuarina, Banksia, Banksia +2, Wattle, Acacia, Waratah and Grevillea. Each motorhome is built into the base vehicle shell, as opposed to on the chasis, making it a safer, easier and more economical drive.
“We were so grateful to be recognised for all the hard work and determination we’ve put in to our business over the past two decades, it has certainly paid off and led us to our success today,” Clayton said.
In its 20th year last year, Horizon Motorhomes also celebrated the sale of the 500th Horizon Motorhome, a proud milestone for the company.
“This was also such a proud moment for our business. We take great pride in every aspect, from design, build, sales and after-sales service of every Horizon Motorhome that passes through our showroom.”
“I still get a kick when I see a Horizon Motorhome travelling along the road,” Clayton said.
Part of the secret to Horizon’s success over the last 21 years has been their dedicated attention to detail and craftsmanship, using only the finest fixtures and fittings.
Built by a team of 15 passionate craftsmen with specialised skills ranging from electricians to cabinet makers, Horizon Motorhomes offer a personalised ‘tailored to suit’ service. In every Horizon Motorhome model there is a huge number of add-on features and variations available to suit each customer’s personal taste.
All Horizon Motorhomes are designed and hand built at their factory in Ballina, from the shell up, using Mercedes Benz Sprinter and Fiat Ducato as base vehicles.
Horizon’s 4X4 Range are built into the Mercedes Benz Sprinter 519CDI and are available in the Waratah, Acacia and Wattle layouts.
“The Horizon Motorhomes range is constantly evolving and we are continually improving our product to suit lifestyle demands,” Clayton said.
“This industry is a lot of fun for me: designing the vans and coming up with new ideas.”
Horizon Motorhomes are sold exclusively by BCMC, in Ballina, NSW. For more information phone (02) 6681 1555.
